Implement - Application Tips

  • Change management may be required as well as train-the-trainer.

Training trainers for competency-based can involve a change in their way of doing business. They may have been lecturers who ruled in the classroom by the force of their personality and knowledge. Competency-based training puts the instructor in a different role. So as well as training on classroom procedures and content, the training may need cultural change events.

  • Automation can help ensure that data gets collected.

Even if the course if very hands on, the recording of the instructor evaluation or the materials evaluation items can be handled by computer. This will allow your data to be collected and collated automatically. This must be planned in advance and executed in the classroom.

  • Student smile sheet evaluations should play very little part in revision decisions.

You are in the position to have true data links between your planned behavioural outcomes and their measurement after instruction. Do not rely on second level data (opinions of students) for revision decisions.

Student happiness with the course is, of course, an important factor in the course's acceptance and it continued viability, especially if there is a nomination system for attendance.

  • The outcomes of the test items will determine how well the course was conducted and designed.

You and the instructors must accept that the success is your responsiblity, not the student's responsiblity.

While the student can affect the measured outcomes of the course, it is not usefull in the long run to claim that course failure is the fault of the student. Only by taking full resonsibility for the course content and its correct delivery can you hope to achieve fully effective instruction. One common problem is the failure of the materials to contain the lower level objectives and instruction that the students need.
